Concrete & Hardscaping
Hardscaping
The built structure of a yard: walkways, steps, borders and drainage that tie the landscape together.
Hardscaping is what makes a yard usable in the rain: where the water goes, how you walk from the driveway to the door, and how a slope becomes steps instead of a muddy hill. It is planned with the planting or without it, but always with the drainage.
Materials are chosen for the site — stone, pavers, concrete, gravel or retaining block — set on a compacted base, with the edging and the drainage that keep them where they were put.
Questions we get about hardscaping
Do you handle drainage?
Yes. Grading, surface drainage and the path the water takes are part of the design. A hardscaped yard that floods is a failed yard.
Do you also do the planting?
The hard structure is ours. Planting can be coordinated with your landscaper so the beds are ready at the right stage of the work.
Pavers or concrete?
Pavers can be lifted and relaid if something under them fails, and they read as individual pieces. Concrete is monolithic and less per square foot. Both work when the base is right.
